Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Behavioral Sleep Medicine is a specialized, evidence-based approach that helps you improve your sleep by understanding the habits, thoughts, behaviors, and biological patterns that shape your nights—and your days. Common sleep difficulties that benefit from behavioral sleep medicine include:
- Chronic Insomnia (difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early)
- Circadian Rhythm Disorders (your internal clock being misaligned, delayed, or irregular)
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea (breathing pauses that disrupt sleep, often treated with CPAP/BiPAP)

Sleep Disorder Assessment
Treatment begins with a thorough sleep assessment where we explore all aspects of your sleep and daily rhythms to understand what’s impacting your rest. A comprehensive evaluation typically involves a one-hour session either in-person or via telehealth from the comfort of your home. During this assessment, we look at:
- Common sleep problems, including insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, restless leg syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea
- Your sleep chronotype, your natural sleep rhythm—early bird, night owl, or in between
- Your sleep history, including when difficulties began and what patterns have developed over time
- Biological and medical influences, such as medications, health conditions, and lifestyle factors
If your assessment indicates a clinical sleep disorder, we will move forward with evidence-based sleep treatments such as CBT-I, circadian rhythm interventions, behavioral strategies, and support with CPAP/BiPAP adherence when appropriate.
For individuals whose symptoms are subthreshold or whose sleep issues don’t neatly align with a specific disorder, personalized support is still available and strongly encouraged. Together, we focus on optimizing sleep habits, strengthening sleep hygiene, and improving daytime routines that promote energy, stability, and truly restorative rest.
Behavioral Sleep Medicine offers a practical and effective path toward better sleep—no matter where you’re starting from.
What Is CBT-I?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold-standard, first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. It helps you change thoughts, habits, and sleep patterns that keep insomnia going. CBT-I combines practical strategies—like adjusting sleep schedules, strengthening your natural sleep drive, and reducing nighttime worry—to help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake feeling more rested. It’s a short-term, highly effective treatment backed by decades of research and lasting results.
Exposure and Relaxation Techniques for PAP Adherence
Exposure and relaxation techniques help you become more comfortable using CPAP or BiPAP mask + machine by reducing anxiety, discomfort, or sensory overwhelm. Through gradual exposure, you practice wearing the mask and experiencing the airflow in small, manageable steps, building familiarity and confidence over time. Relaxation strategies—such as paced breathing, grounding, or muscle relaxation—are paired with these steps to calm the body’s stress response. Together, these techniques make PAP therapy easier to tolerate, leading to better comfort, consistency, and improved sleep quality.
What Is Sleep Hygiene?
Sleep hygiene refers to the daily habits, routines, and environmental factors that support healthy, consistent sleep. It includes things like maintaining a regular sleep schedule, creating a calm sleep environment, limiting stimulants, winding down before bed, and managing light and screen use. These simple, practical behaviors help strengthen your body’s natural sleep rhythms and make restful sleep more frequent.
